Resveratrol is a bioactive substance known to be found in grapes, red wine, and grape juice, but it’s also found in blueberries, cranberries, peanuts, and even pistachios. In nature, resveratrol is a natural fungicide that fights fungi that destroy plants, so it is a biologically active substance that is a primary component of a plant’s health defense system.

When people consume resveratrol, different types of human cells are stimulated and behavior is also affected. For example, resveratrol activates cardiac stem cells, which normally lie dormant in your heart but are able to regenerate heart tissue in response to stress. Scientists from Soochow University, Kunshan Third People’s Hospital and Nanjing Medical University studied the effects of resveratrol on cardiac stem cells in mice. They gave resveratrol to healthy normal mice every day for a week and found that even in the absence of disease, resveratrol increased the number of heart stem cells in heart tissue by 0.7-fold.

In mice that had suffered a heart attack, the researchers injected 1 million cardiac stem cells to see if they could save the heart. Animals given resveratrol along with the stem cells increased the number of blood vessels in their hearts and almost doubled the survival rate of cardiac stem cells.

The challenge with actual intake of resveratrol is that it is found in too little in red wine and most foods, so people would need to consume a lot of wine to match the amount used in most studies. Because of this, resveratrol may be one of the few exceptions, where bioactive substances may be better obtained from concentrated supplements than from real food

Foods rich in zeaxanthin

Zeaxanthin is a bioactive substance belonging to carotenoid. It is a pigment that gives corn and saffron their orange-yellow color, but it is also common in leafy greens such as kale, mustard greens, spinach, watercress, carsuras, and bracken. Zeaxanthin is also found in high levels in goji berries, a red, flat, oval berry used in Asian herbal teas, soups and stir-fries. This bioactive substance is very important for the health of the eyes. After eating foods containing zeaxanthin, zeaxanthin accumulates in the retina, the layer at the back of the eye that senses light and transmits it to the brain. Clinical studies have shown that eating zeaxanthin can help protect the eyes from the blinding effects of age-related macular degeneration.

Scientists from Jinan University in Guangzhou and Shenzhen Third People’s Hospital in China studied the effects of zeaxanthin on stem cells. They used liposuction to extract stem cells from human fat and exposed them to zeaxanthin. These stem cells survived better than those not exposed to zeaxanthin and showed fewer signs of inflammation. The scientists then tested whether zeaxanthin could help stem cells save organs damaged by disease. They injected 2 million mesenchymal stem cells, derived from human fat tissue, into mice with failing livers, so they could regenerate mouse livers. Some of the mice were injected with stem cells that had previously been exposed to zeaxanthin, while the rest were injected with untreated stem cells. After seven days, common stem cell therapy reduced liver damage by about half. However, in mice injected with stem cells treated with zeaxanthin, the stem cells reduced liver damage by 75 percent over the same period.

The results of this study suggest that eating foods containing zeaxanthin may contribute to the performance of our stem cells in organ regeneration.

Foods rich in chlorogenic acid

Chlorogenic acid is another powerful bioactive substance found in abundance in coffee, but also in black tea, blueberries, peaches, fresh plums and prunes, eggplants, and even bamboo shoots. It has anti-inflammatory, antiangiogenic and antihypertensive effects. Its benefits also include the protection of stem cells. Researchers at Nanchang University in China studied how chlorogenic acid affects the survival of mesenchymal stem cells, which are involved in organ healing and regeneration. They found that when the stem cells were exposed to chlorogenic acid, they were more resistant to stress and doubled their survival rate, increasing their ability to participate in keeping the body’s organs healthy.

Black raspberry

When the researchers measured the hardness of blood vessels in people who ate black raspberry powder, they found that these people’s blood vessel hardness decreased over 12 weeks, reflecting their healthier blood vessels and the benefits of more circulating stem cells.

Chinese celery

Chinese celery, a common vegetable in Asia, has a thinner stem and a stronger flavor than Western celery. You may have eaten it in a Chinese stir-fry dish, as it is usually on the menu of authentic Chinese restaurants. The leaves, stems and seeds of Chinese celery are edible and contain a variety of bioactive substances that promote health, one of which is 3-n-butylphthalein (NBP). 3-n-butylphthalein is important because it was approved by Chinese regulators in 2002 as a drug for doctors to use as a neuroprotective treatment for stroke patients. 3-n-butylphthalein, also found in supplements containing celery seed extract, may improve brain circulation, reduce brain inflammation, enable nerve growth, and reduce damage to the brain from stroke.

Researchers at Soochow University in China studied how 3-n-butylphthalein could help stroke patients recover. They recruited 170 people who had suffered an acute ischemic stroke, a condition in which a blood clot interrupts blood flow and triggers the death of part of the brain. In the trial, some patients received 3-n-butylphthalein orally, while others received only standard treatment. Blood was drawn seven, 14 and 30 days after treatment. In all patients, the number of stem cells in the blood increased immediately after a stroke, which is an expected response to a person’s regenerative health defense system, but in patients who received only standard treatment, stem cell levels decreased after the seventh day. In contrast, in patients treated with 3-n-butylphthalein, their circulating stem cells steadily increased. By day 30, circulating stem cell levels were 75 percent higher in patients treated with 3-n-butylphthalein than in patients treated with standard therapy alone. CT scans of the brain showed that people who took 3-n-butylphthalein also had improved blood flow in areas of the wind, which can be explained by an increase in the number of stem cells called to the damaged part of the brain.

While these results come from a drug form of 3-n-butylphthalein, it suggests that a bioactive substance contained in Chinese celery has properties that activate stem cells, which may help with organ healing and regeneration after a major illness such as stroke.

Red wine

Drinking red wine in moderation is beneficial to health. Researchers at the Taipei Veterans General Hospital in China studied stem cells from 80 healthy people in their 30s. They drank either red wine (half a glass), beer (one can), vodka (one small glass) or water every day for three weeks. During the study period, they were prohibited from drinking tea, grape juice, or all other alcoholic beverages in addition to the beverages specified above. At the start of the study, blood pressure, stem cell levels and other physical parameters were similar for all of them.

After 3 weeks, blood tests showed that the red wine drinkers had doubled the levels of endothelial progenitor cells circulating in their blood. Participants who drank beer, vodka or water did not enjoy the same benefits. When these stem cells were exposed to red wine or resveratrol, they had a greater ability to migrate, form blood vessels and survive. In addition, those who drank red wine had a 35 percent increase in the ability of their blood vessels to dilate, a sign of vascular health. Red wine drinkers also had 50% more of the powerful signal nitric oxide in their blood, one of the body’s most basic signals for good health. Nitric oxide not only helps blood vessels dilate, but also stimulates angiogenesis, promotes healing, and sends signals to activate stem cells. When it comes to red wine, more is not always better. The researchers reported that this benefit was seen with 1-2 glasses of wine per day, but the more wine was consumed, the smaller the benefit. It’s important to know that high levels of alcohol can actually damage stem cells and interfere with their ability to regenerate organs. So, as with most foods in your diet, moderation is key. Green tea
