Collagen peptides and health

Collagen peptides and health

Collagen mainly exists in the bones, tendons, myosheaths, ligaments, myofilms, cartilages and skin of animals. It is an extremely important protein in connective tissues and plays a role in supporting organs and protecting the body.

There are many types of collagen, the general skin and bone is type I collagen, cartilage is type II collagen, embryonic skin is type III collagen, cell basement membrane is type IV collagen.

Collagen consists of three polypeptide chains to form a three-strand helix structure, that is, each of the three polypeptide chains forms a left-hand spiral to the left, and the three peptide chains are combined with each other by hydrogen bonds to form a firm right-hand superhelix, which is very stable. The main amino acids of collagen are proline, glycine and alanine.

The relationship with health

1. Improves skin aging

Collagen peptide intervention can significantly increase the content of hydroxyproline and collagen in skin, promote the formation of new collagen in skin, normalize the ratio of type I/type III collagen, and significantly enhance the activity of antioxidant enzymes in skin, thereby improving the degree of skin relaxation.

In two double-blind randomized controlled trials conducted by Proksch et al., after 8 weeks of collagen peptide intervention, compared with the placebo group, the skin elasticity of subjects in the collagen peptide dose group was significantly improved, the volume of eye wrinkles was significantly reduced (20%), and the skin type collagen (65%) and elastin (18%) were significantly increased. It has positive effect on dermal matrix synthesis.

2. Prevent osteoporosis

Collagen peptide can increase osteoblast proliferation, differentiation and bone matrix mineralization, reduce bone resorption of osteoclasts, increase bone mineral density, avoid bone resorption, and increase the production of type I collagen and mucopolysaccharide, so as to prevent and treat osteoporosis.

Clinical study results showed that after 12 months of intervention with collagen peptide 5g+ vitamin D 200IU+ elemental calcium 500mg calcium collagen chelate, postmenopausal female subjects with bone mass loss significantly reduced the total bone mineral density loss.

3. Prevention and treatment of three high levels, promote cardiovascular health

Studies have shown that collagen peptide can improve the blood glucose level and lipid metabolism of Chinese patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Compared with the control group, the levels of fasting blood glucose, glycosylated hemoglobin A1c, fasting insulin, total triglyceride, total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein and free fatty acid in the collagen peptide group are significantly reduced. Insulin sensitivity index and HDL cholesterol levels increased.

Lin et al. found that fish skin collagen peptides with molecular weight in the range of 3-10KD had a certain protective and repairing effect on vascular endothelial cell damage, and its effect was enhanced with the increase of peptide concentration in a certain concentration range.

4. Other functions

In addition to the above effects, it also has the effect of antioxidant, relieve liver function injury, promote wound healing, enhance immunity, improve learning and memory ability, inhibit angiotensin converting enzyme activity and so on.
