Functions of Vitamin K1

Coagulation

Vitamin K is an indispensable substance for the synthesis of prothrombin in the liver, and its function is to promote the conversion of prothrombin precursor into prothrombin. Deficiency can cause hypoprothrombinemia and coagulation disorders. There are well-established guidelines for the use of vitamin K1 as a hemostatic agent . For example, newborns are given 1 mg of K1 shortly after birth to prevent potentially fatal bleeding due to vitamin K deficiency.

Reduce Fracture Risk

A study from Australia showed that the risk of fracture-related hospitalization was at its lowest when vitamin K1 intake was approximately 100 μg/day. In community-dwelling older women, higher dietary vitamin K1 is associated with a lower long-term risk of fractures and hip fracture-related hospitalizations . Another study from the UK showed that serum vitamin K1 was significantly reduced in the fracture group (common fracture: 0.53 [0.41], no fracture; 0.65 [0.66] μg/L, p=0.04), and reduced vitamin K1 was independently associated with fracture risk Related.

Anti-oxidize Effect

Vitamin K1 prevents oxidative stress in neuronal cells and primary oligodendrocytes by blocking the activation of 12-lipoxygenase and the production of ROS . Intake of vitamin K improves cognitive function in healthy older adults. One of the studies showed that vitamin K1 was associated with better verbal episodic memory performance, specifically better performance on recall tests .
